Venice

Venice is unique. See Venice and die they say - but what they actually mean is that you must see it before you die - and indeed you must. Don't go in the summer when it is crawling with tourists - go in November. You'll need to wrap up - it can be bitingly cold but you'll find a Venice of Venecians. After you've been on the No 1 to see the Grand Canal, start to walk around. Explore the small squares and churches. Absorb the wonderfull colours of the buildings. Eat with the Venecians and you'll eat well and inexpensively. Eat withe the Americans and you'll eat well and pay through the nose. Seek out a small inexpensive hotel as near to St Marks as you can as a base. Don't forget the islands - Torcello will haunt you forever. When you have experienced the beauty of Venice, nothing will ever seem the same again.

Venice - never forgotten
